Just in case you didn’t hear

Wanneroo Ladies WON the semi final against Kalamunda 10-0 in a rainy game.

As the only Wanneroo team left in the comp it would be a huge boost to the girls if we could get the word spread for our:-

Preliminary final this Sunday 27th August at Rugby Park

Kick off - 10:00am.

We will be playing Cottesloe and I know it will be the reverse of the norm, but a cheer squad would be very much appreciated by all the girls.

Please try to get there early because the City to Surf run is on at the same time and the traffic may be heavy.

Game review

Everything came together and every single person stepped up and played brilliantly.

Sera had great break through runs and almost scored off a penalty. Unfortunately the ref called her back cos the opposition weren't ready; Fetu as hooker was fantastic in defence and put her body on the line every time; Ave scored our second try and despite a deep cut from last week played the full game and took down the big girls; Meredith was solid as a rock and with Nicole kept her cool and made great tackles; Georgie was unreal, fired up and injected herself where needed; Lisa had some great runs and was always in therel; Lianna was consistently powerful and provided the drive we needed in the rucks and mauls; Sammi was cool under pressure and the forwards protected the ball to give her the time she needed to get the ball out and made good passes to Esther.

Esther as captain was cool, calm and controlled the game well, she didn't drop one ball and delivered the ball to where it needed to go. She also discovered some pretty damn good kicking ability; Tamara cut the opposition to pieces and was absolutely everywhere, she scored our first try by breaking through the opposition as if they weren't even there and scored under the posts; Mandy (the toughest girl I know) had a great game and her boot just gets better and better.

Verona instinctively did everything right and provided support often where it was needed most; Flick just bounces off the opposition, gets up and keeps going regardless of how hard she's been hit - her energy levels were 100% the whole game; All 50+ kilos of our wonderful fullback, Carmel, were instrumental in collecting the ball when Kala started to get desperate and resorted to kicking.

All she needs is a smaller jersey because, honestly, grabbing her by the jumper is the only way the opposition seems able to get their hands on her.

Toto replaced Verona in the second half and injected some fresh legs and made at least two important runs to help set up our second try; On the bench, yelling and screaming and jumping in support was Samantha (out with a neck injury), Dimitie and Karen (shoulder injuries); Every individual played for the team, not for themselves and stayed focussed and kept their heads up. The Wanneroo women were a shining example of true team work and the game was a great advert for womens rugby in WA. We have the game on DVD and have watched it twice already, but we will play it again if you want to watch it.

Our scrum was awesomely strong, even though Kala had the bigger girls. Once in the scrum our girls looked bigger because their body positions were flat and straight while Kala were bunched up and crooked. The pack relished every scrum and lineout and it all just worked brilliantly. The opposition were just buckling under our scrum and getting tired. Even in the wet, there weren't as many knock on’s as you would expect and the girls didn't get flustered by the conditions. The backs talked to each other constantly and possibly more importantly, listened to each other and then did whatever was needed. Coaches Edgar and Bill were positive throughout and communicated the important things quickly and efficiently. They were ecstatic and proud of our win. Vic as the Big M (manager) took care of all the behind the scenes stuff which enabled us to focus on the game itself.

As you can see, I'm pretty impressed with our Roo Dogs and want to spread the word. The club needs to support all grades and it was a shame there was not more support for 6th grade and women to share the love in the rain.

Thanks to Johnno, Nellie and Dave (Mandy's dad) and the 6th graders for their support - it means a lot, particularly when they are as loud as Dave!

Ok I think I need to come down off my high now and plot ways to get time off work to play next weekend!

Cheers to you all
