Welcome from our Junior President

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new and existing Junior members to the 2022 Season at Wanneroo Rugby Union club. 2022 represents our fiftieth year in operation as a club and it’s an honour and privilege to lead the Junior club as the incoming Junior President. I would like to acknowledge Carla Honeycombe for her significant contribution to the Junior club in her tenure as Junior President as she transitions into her new role as Secretary of the Board for the club.

We are carrying a lot of positive momentum into our traditional Winter season. In addition to our revered Junior Rugby Academy being held over summer, our Summer Touch 7s competition experienced tremendous growth with just under 200 juniors registered to the competition and a number of our Juniors participated in our inaugural Country of Origin 7s tournament. Needless to say that 2022 will be one of our biggest season’s yet!

This season, we have three objectives in the Junior club:

1.                   Grow the game

Rugby is an inclusive sport, accommodating players of many shapes, sizes and abilities.

Despite two full seasons living with COVID-19, the Junior club has continued to grow membership and perform at the highest level in the state across a number of teams both in the male and female game. We intend to create multiple points of access to the sport through a variety of tournaments and variations of the traditional XV game, with Sevens and Touch Rugby continuing to grow within the club. We will continue to seek opportunities to maintain this growth trajectory and grow the impact that Rugby can have in the community by welcoming new players to the club.

2.                   Financial solidarity

Ensuring long-term sustainability and prosperity of our club through disciplined financial management

This will be more important than ever this season as we continue to navigate COVID-19 for the third season running. Unlike many other clubs in Western Australia, we enjoy the benefit of having access to Rugby pitches all year round. This provides the platform with which we can grow the game with multiple tournaments and variations on the game, however, we need to ensure that we ensure that each tournament and the overall club operations remains financially viable. There are a variety of ways to support the club financially – your continued support in memberships, sponsorships (club, age group and player) as well as sponsoring specific packages of work around the club.

3.                   Inclusive club culture

Building a family-friendly club culture where all members have a sense of belonging.

Going into our 50th year in operation it’s fair to say that the club has been the cornerstone of many friendships over the years. Our Country of Origin 7s tournament celebrated the diversity that we have not only in the sport here in Western Australia but also within our club, with many of our Juniors representing a variety of countries around the world during the tournament. We want our club to continue to recognise and leverage the strength we have in our diversity as a club.

I look forward to sharing my passion of the sport with you as we work towards these objectives as a Club. Please get in touch as we go through the season with any comments, ideas or concerns. Our aim is to build a club that us and our children will love to call their rugby home, and we can only do that with you on the journey with us.

I wish all players, parents, coaches, managers and volunteers all the very best for the 2022 season and encourage you all to get involved as we celebrate the club’s proud 50 year history in 2022 and build on the rich culture we are blessed to have at Wanneroo Rugby Club.

Yours in Rugby,

Andy Bell
